Cosmetic Surgery for Men: Looks or Health?

[Introduction]

[Hook] On an article from “Men Seeking Cosmetic Surgery: Two women give their views” describing the opinions towards the importance of cosmetic surgery, where one woman, Louisa Young explains, “Unless there is something that needs fixing, why face it?” [Bridge] Young questions and asserts that if there is the need to seek cosmetic surgery, then it can be done for needed purposes. On the other hand, if cosmetic surgery is taken in consideration towards a better life with better looks, it can lead to difficult decisions. Cosmetic surgery can be painful, but also dangerous. There are many advantages for cosmetic surgery, but there are also disadvantages. The media has sometimes been putting pressure not only on woman, but men as well towards taking in consideration the benefits of cosmetic surgery and worrying them about the way they look. [Divided Thesis/ Stasis] [Opponents subordinate claim] Although opponents agree with men seeking cosmetic surgery is beneficial towards a positive change with their appearance, [Rhetor’s Main Claim] consequences or concerns can interfere with [Reason #1] the individual’s health, [Reason #2] with the individual’s taking in consideration other healthier choices for having a better appearance, and [Reason #3] the individual’s risks throughout the procedure.

[Narration]

[Topic Sentence] In the United States and Europe cosmetic surgery became common during the nineteenth and twentieth century. The need for cosmetic surgery is because of the fixing, reconstructing, or repairing of defects or injuries from the patients.  According to my research on the history of cosmetic surgery, Dr. John Peter Mettauer introduced the first operation in 1827 where he used his own created instruments. Plastic surgery increased its popularity during and after World War I because of so many injuries such as broken jaws, damaged noses, damaged lips, skull injuries, head injuries, and facial injuries. Cosmetic Surgery was also involved with aesthetics. Aesthetics procedures developed and were used for patients who had concerns of beauty itself and were emotional with the way they look or feel about themselves. Cosmetic surgery was mostly involved with woman, until an increasing number of men were developed due to looking deep towards their appearance. In addition to my research, the medial profession and the media had lead towards the equality of woman and men seeking cosmetic surgery, but arguing how men are getting closer to the same amount woman are with the use of cosmetic surgery. As a result of the common and existence of cosmetic surgery, a debate has been brought in from the media and medical professions towards the community about taking consideration of the offerings given towards the use of cosmetic surgery. Even though cosmetic surgery is used to help patients with feeling better when it comes to the choices made towards procedures with their appearance, cosmetic surgery has increased, created, and also helped a million people with the necessity of fixing or requiring any part of their body with saving their life’s. Cosmetic surgery can interfere with the patient’s health and consequences throughout their lives.

[Confirmation]

[Topic Sentence] Men seeking cosmetic surgery with concerns of their looks can be dangerous towards their life with considering difficult decisions and problems with their health. Cosmetic surgery may not be the only process to take consideration towards the change of looks. Therefore, such opportunities provided are exercising, taking therapy, or even eating healthy. These options can lead to a healthier life without the necessity of changing the way an individual look that can lead to greater risks of health issues such as diseases or skin problems. For example, Jerry Kennard explains in his article, “Male Cosmetic Surgery,” that “…cosmetic surgery illustrates its potential dangers…” “…abnormal hearth rhythm, heart attack, brain, damage, nerve damage, stroke, blood clots, and blood loss and air way obstruction. Infection, skin death, asymmetry, numbness. Irregularities, puckers and scarring, fluid collection after liposuction can result form the surgery itself…” Kennard asserts that the dangers and risk of surgery can be difficult and depending on the situation of the operation, the existence of these types of dangers can depend on how one takes care of themselves as well. In addition to the cosmetic surgery, money issues arise. For example, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), the cost for plastic surgery continues to rise and is becoming increasingly difficult to afford. This explains how the more there is the seeking of cosmetic seeking for any purpose; there is the increasing of the money cost depending on the type of surgery. According to my research of 12 Reasons not to Have plastic Surgery, “even in the hands of the most experienced plastic surgeon, plastic surgery has risks just like any other surgical procedure. This article describes the variety of reasons that surgical procedures can lead to. Many of the procedures can be dangerous and throughout any moment there can be a dangerous situation towards the surgery. Cosmetic surgery has been an increased with woman and now with men towards taking in consideration for better looks, but there are severely issues that come across with the health of the individual and the dangers of facing the surgical procedures.

[Concession/Refutation]

[Topic Sentence] It is, indeed true, that opponents agree with men seeking cosmetic surgery is beneficial towards a positive change with their appearance.  [Warrant] There are many of the masses who agree with seeking cosmetic surgery as a way to make them look better that will lead to increasing their self-esteem in a positive way. For example, according to my research on the Benefits of Cosmetic Surgery, “individuals who undergo cosmetic surgery find themselves emotionally more confident.” This conviction shows that many of the individuals seeking cosmetic surgery live better focusing on their life and not worrying about the way others look at them because they feel confident towards the way they look and feel. In addition to Marisa Felice, “one’s body image, or perception of how they look, often controls their life, both directly and indirectly.” This explains how seeking plastic surgery can help any individual with their struggles towards their image which sometimes worries what other surrounding them may think of them. Perhaps most convincing, there is the increase of men getting hired for making money. For example, Tommy Gunn, from an article, “Benefits of plastic Surgery” asserts that “…It may also increase an individual’s productivity.” Gunn describes how woman and men seeking cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery can lead to improvement with their appearance; there they get changes to get hired with jobs. They can become more successfully with the job they have or the career their seeking. [Rhetor’s Main Claim] [Refutation] But consequences or concerns can interfere with the individual’s health, with the individual’s money issues, and the individual’s risks throughout the procedure. Having cosmetic surgery for a better looking appearance can interfere with the individual’s health. [Evidence #1 for Reason #1] According to an article for Male Cosmetic Surgery, “men now take increasing responsibility for their own choices in health care and one aspect of this is the growth in male cosmetic surgery.” This evidence explains why there is an increase of men seeking cosmetic surgery than it was for woman too. Men have been making decisions taking the risk of the dangers throughout cosmetic surgery can lead to their health problems. [Evidence #2 for reason #1] In addition to an article, “Injecting Silicone, and Risk,” by Natasha Singer, describes how many of the masses can suffer for procedures that had causes a health issue. Singer mentions how many of the health problems are caused by liquid injections for silicone. If the person goes through a surgical procedure the health issues can either increases or decrease depending on how they take care of themselves. [Evidence #3 for reason #1]. According to Singer, there are woman who have suffered from inflammation and even bumps after a surgery. These women are suffering from health problems due to procedures of cosmetic surgery. [Conclusion] Health problems are major concern in life to think about and try to help oneself to be healthier.

[Topic Sentence]  Men seeking cosmetic surgery can interfere with the not taking in consideration of other healthier choices for having a better appearance. The health problems can increase throughout many situations, but there are many options for making one feel comfortable and look better. [Evidence #1 for Reason #2] In addition to this article “Cosmetic Surgery: Look Good without It,” tells about the healthiest way to stay young is by having healthy lifestyle that can lead too a younger body. Such as exercising and it is very healthy because it gets the circulation going.  Living a healthy life can be beneficial towards either attitude on a daily basis. [Evidence #2 for Reason #2] As I was researching through my sources, I found interesting how in an article talking about  healthier ways” For Your Skin”,  mentions how a younger look can depend on excellent skin. Having exercises for facial muscles can help out with the looks that appear and feel healthy. [Evidence #3 for Reason #2]From my research of healthiness “For Your Mind,” says “It is often said that you are as young as you feel.” This assertion show how with having a healthy mind and being able to keep the brain active and growing, the person feels more energetic, confident of themselves, comfortable, or even feel young as well. [Conclusion] Better and healthier choices like the ones above have shown the ability to give them a chance and try to see if it works out when wanting to feel comfortable feel better, or even feel healthy.

[Topic Sentence] Also, there can be dangerous situations when seeking cosmetic surgery, especially interfering with the individual’s risks throughout the procedure. Cosmetic surgery has saved many of the masses, but although there are surgeons who are professionally trained in their job, throughout many procedures there can be difficult and dangerous situations occurring.  [Evidence #1 for Reason #3] According to and article, “Plastic Surgery: Benefits, Risks, and Disadvantages,” an individual’s health issue or concerns throughout the procedures can increase thee danger of what they can be facing. This article asserts that even people who have diabetes, the procedures can cause a really dangerous situation depending on the surgery. Also, there may be not experienced surgeons for the specific surgery and that can lead to problems if anything dangerous happens during the operation. Like mentioned in the article, many surgeons can be only familiar with minor smaller surgeries, where people die or have health problems. [Evidence #2 for Reason #3] In addition in the source on “Physical Contraindications,” explains how that throughout operations or even choosing a surgeon can depend on an individual’s life this source asserts how there would be “…bleeding tendencies, hypertension, heart disease, and even ear infections….” The risks taken by a procedure have become a danger to those seeking cosmetic surgery. [Evidence #3 for Reason#3] This article of “Clinic Risk in Cosmetic Surgery,” asserts how some patients go throughout physiological risks. Many people may not be able to afford some of the cosmetic procedures, but many of those individual’s can be worrying about or pressured to taking in consideration of cosmetic surgery. [Conclusion] The less an individual takes care of themselves after a surgery, the greater the risks may be concerning their health depending on their procedure.

[Summation] Cosmetic surgery has been a help to people who have suffered. On the other hand, it had sometimes lead to dangerous procedures and health issue within the individual. Many surgeons may be certified or not for their job, but during any situation anything can happen. The masses can take in consideration and try out the options given for a healthier way to look better. The masses has brought and grown the cosmetic surgery to where it is today, but there has also been the cause of deaths, injuries, and even health problems with the patient. The surgeons should be certified and talk to their patients carefully about information on them seeking cosmetic surgery, but also viewing their health issued that can be developed or even caused at anytime, where it depends  on the situation of the operation. The individual’s may be comfortable and healthier in their lives with think about the options there are besides cosmetic surgery for a better appearance.
