Reflections on Self and Reality

Waggy the Pinscher

(Unity/Topic Sentence) Hello everyone! Yours truly, Waggy, the favorite pet of Araceli Resendiz would like to introduce señorita Aguilar, a responsible dog owner who is exceedingly caring and hardworking, as well as a serious Cal Poly Pomona student. (Adequate Development/Body)  Araceli is good-hearted and can be relied on for everything. To prove this observation, yours truly will take everyone on a travel through time, back to mid April of 2008. One day after yours truly ate a copious amount of hot dogs, the stomach decided to fight against the rest of the body organs. Araceli was quick to drive her favorite pet to the animal hospital emergency room, but she did not have money for the expenses and the doctor gave her the option to put yours truly down (and yours truly is not talking about hot-dog depression). Araceli frantically called one of her family members in hopes they could help her, and by-golly they did!  Araceli’s responsibility was to take care of yours truly, and she fulfilled that responsibility with flying colors. However, this story does not only give her kudos, it also constructs her image as a caring individual. Furthermore, her caring nature is seen when it comes to responsibility. When considering the health of yours truly, nail clipping, grooming, feeding, giving a place to live in, and a family, are the normal provisions. The royal treatment is not just for kings! Throughout recent years, Araceli has been busy seeking a career of Zoology during her academic years at University of Cal Poly Pomona. Yours truly remembers the time when Araceli called her professor at 2:00 AM asking for help! And yet in the midst of her busy schedule, when she comes home, she is able to provide unforgettable adventures responsibly and with care. What a sweetheart! (Coherence/Conclusion) From yours truly's experience as a pet, living with Araceli Resendiz Aguilar, a responsible, caring, hardworking, and serious owner has created a beautiful journey.

(Continuity/Smooth Transition) Thank you,Waggy, for the introduction. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to grow and learn, improving in responsibility and working on communication and leadership skills. One of my weakest skills is public speaking. When I first came to this university, I did not speak much and I was afraid of speaking. During my freshman or sophomore year, I joined an organization on campus called “MASA,” which stands for Mexican American Student Association. Any student of any ethnicity was more than welcome to join in and become a part of the community. The objectives of this organization are to help promote higher education, provide a tutoring program, provide community service, and give back to our community. I felt comfortable and welcomed by the friendly people, and I joined in wholeheartedly. I thought this organization was interesting and unique, and "MASA" gave me the opportunity to learn about my cultural background and help our community.

Referring back to Waggy, she has been with me for many years, she is by my side, and accompanies me. Waggy, along with my seven other dogs, motivate me and give me the opportunity to continue in my interests and pursuit of helping animals. They are my best friends, a part of my life and family. Waggy is one of my childhood dogs. I have grown with her and learned so much about dogs. For example, I learned about their behavior, their way of communicating with others, their health, their feeding, and taking care of them when they are puppies. Taking care of animals in my life has helped me grow and learn to be responsible. I had the honor of helping animals by volunteering in an animal hospital. I would take care of animals that need help, especially dogs and cats, by feeding, cleaning, and watching their health behavior. In the future, my goals are to become an Animal nurse (Veterinary Technician) or work hands-on with animals. Animals are unique in that humans speak for them, and their health is important, just as it is for human beings. Since I was small, I loved animals. They are very unique and interesting. I want to pursue a career with animals. I also know I need to improve in many areas and still learn much more. Animals such as dogs are my inspiration, "You'll never walk alone because I'll always be with  you."

In this class, English 105, I want to learn to become a strong critical thinker, as well as improve in my writing, reading, and public speaking to help myself throughout life and future endeavors. In addition, I hope to learn, grow, and gain more through this class. Not only would I want to practice my writing, work on paragraph structure, and rewrite to improve my writing skills, but also become a better writer, as the class mantra states, “The Best Writing is Rewriting.” Furthermore, Derek Bok states, "The number of college degrees is not nearly as important as how well student develop cognitive skills, such as critical thinking, and problem solving ability" (78).  Therefore, learning is a journey to experience.
